Jim Tovey Lakeview Community Update

March 14, 2011

The room was not full but the audience was interactive. Jim said that he plans to hold frequent meetings like this to inform residents about what is happening in our community, the City and the Region. Jim has become a member of the Boards of the Audit Committee, the Environment Committee, the Heritage Committee as well as a member of the Region Council and other activities where he will be aware of what our governors are doing.

Haig St. Development

A developer is applying to OMB to change the zoning so he can build a high density town house development on property on the east side of Haig immediately north of the railway tracks. The City council and the Planning Department consider the proposal inappropriate as designed. It will not only increase traffic on Haig, impinge on the golf course but it will overshadow all the adjacent single family homes.

Many people at the meeting are very upset about this project.

Transit on Lakeshore

Jim is working with the Mississauga Transit to institute 13 minute bus travel on Lakeshore from Longbranch GO to Port Credit GO. Frequent bus service will he believes enhance the community.

Arsenal Park/ Small Arms Building

These places are at the foot of Dixie Road on the south side of Lakeshore Road from Marie Curtis Park west. The Small Arms Building is to become a place for artisans and artists as well as an educational place. The grounds around will be a new parkland with special gardens and other features. The designs are being made now.

Hanlan Feeder Main

An 8 foot pipe is to be installed to carry water from the Water Treatment Plant up to Brampton and on to wherever. This is a project of Peel Region. It will create 2 million cubic meters of excess fill which Peel would like to dump in the lake in front of the sewage plant and west ward. Jim is opposing this use of the fill. The Region wants to double the size of the sewage treatment plant to take waste water from communities to the north including Vaughan as a profit making venture. This would seriously damage plans for the Inspiration Project which is developing plans to develop the Lakeview Generating Plant land.

Inspiration Project

This is a very important plan for the OPG lands that has been in development for several years by architects, engineers and citizens. The plans will be presented to City Council on April 18, 2011. For details see http://www.mississauga.ca/portal/residents/inspirationlakeview .

Everyone is invited and should definitely participate. It will have a huge impact on the cultural and tourist development of this part of Mississauga and Etobicoke.

Jim has worked very hard to bring this about when he was President of the Lakeshore Ratepayers Association. It is interesting to note that he has steered a proposal to designate Port Credit as a Cultural Node beginning in May and this will permit the community to make Port Credit a very tourist friendly place.

Walmart Development

All the good works that planners, merchants, citizens and residents to create a vibrant community along Lakeshore Road are under threat from the Beast of Bentonville which has eyes on our community for a big box store development.

Where? It's the huge property now housing the Bike Zone shop which was once an appliance factory and is diagonally across from the Beer store and Metro Grocery Store on Lakeshore Road.

The plan is to for a 135000 square foot store, a Costco and behind them 3 -13 storey and 2 -25 story high rise condos.

It would likely become a box store development like Heartland, maybe a little smaller.

Whenever Walmart comes to a town small business goes and we could expect most of the small shops along Lakeshore all the way to Port Credit to close.

Walmart also plans another store on the south side of Dundas Street east of Dixie roughly across from the Brick. Dundas is already a thriving commercial corridor unlike the part of Lakeshore Road in our communities.

A development of 75 town homes is under way for the property just east of this site across the creek and beside the Shoppers Drug Store.

So, that is a summary of events this evening.

December 6, 2010 - Inspiration Lakeview

The three day Inspiration project was completed last week and many ideas were received from citizens, students, consultants and other concerning how the OPG lands where the Lakeview Coal Generating Station once stood can be developed to benefit Lakeview, Mississauga and Ontario. Plans are not complete but there will be a combination or residential, commercial, light industrial and most importantly social, recreational, educational and cultural facilities linked to the lake and the city. It will be a world class site and a destination to please visitors, residents and everyone who comes and returns. A design proposal will be presented to City Counsel early in 2011 but the general concept already has the strong support of Mayor McCallion and the Ontario Government.
